The National Security Council (MGK) meeting was held under the chairmanship of President Abdullah Gül at the Çankaya Presidential Palace. The members of the Council discussed the regional developments and other related issues, which concern the peace and security of the people, and they also reviewed the level reached in terms of the resolution process regarding the Kurdish question.

President-elect Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, as Prime Minister, attended the meeting for the last time which President Gül, whose term in office is to end on August 28, chaired.
The Secretariat General of the MGK issued a written statement which said the members of the Council evaluated in detail the measures that have been taken and should further be taken regarding the issues concerning the security of the people. They also reviewed the level reached in terms of the resolution process regarding the Kurdish question, noted the statement. “The members have reiterated their happiness that the presidential election was held in peace and security across the country.”
ATMOSPHERE OF CLASHES IN IRAQ
The members of the MGK, continued the Secretariat General, discussed the possible influences of the atmosphere of clashes in Iraq, which are intensifying these days, on Turkey and the region as a whole, adding that Turkey will continue to lend its support to the Iraqi people and the efforts toward the establishment of a new government in that country for the sake of the establishment of peace there. “The MGK members also evaluated the situation of the Turkmen people and the staff of Turkey’s Consulate in Mosul who are held in that city.” The statement further underscored that the members also discussed the influences of the ongoing clashes in Syria and other related issues in Iraq on the security and stability of the region.
DEVELOPMENTS IN GAZA
The MGK Secretariat General noted that the members shared their views on the Israeli operations against Gaza and that they reiterated their sadness about the loss of life due to these operations. The members, maintained the Secretariat General, declared that a sustainable ceasefire in the region can be possible when the restrictions on Gaza are lifted altogether, adding that Turkey will increase its humanitarian aid to Gaza.
