The First Lady accompanied President Gül on his visit to the city of Osmaniye. President Abdullah Gül and First Lady Hayrünnisa Gül were welcomed at Adana Airport by Governor İlhan Atış; Deputy Mayor Zihni Aldırmaz; the 6th Corps Commander Gen. Mehmet Eröz and other officials. Proceeding to the city of Osmaniye by land, the First Couple, enjoying great enthusiasm from citizens on the way, dropped by the province of Toprakkale, where they delighted in the folk dancing displayed for them.
FIRST LADY WITH PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
The First Lady, accompanying President Gül on his visit to the city of Osmaniye, paid visits to the Vocational Rehabilitation Center for the Disabled and the Center for Rural Development and Social Progress in the city.
Upon her arrival to the former, the First Lady was welcomed with flowers. Briefed about the activities and needs of the center, Mrs. Hayrünnisa Gül later inspected the workshops constructed to enable the people with disabilities to participate in both social and educational activities. The First Lady, further exploring the activity room and the computer laboratory, was interested in each of the people with disabilities there. They later presented Mrs. Gül a chest they had painted at the workshop where they paint wood and ceramics. During her visit, two of the children with disabilities read poems and one of them sang a song. Afterwards, the First Lady left the Vocational Rehabilitation Center for the Disabled.
The First Lady later visited the Governor Zübeyir Kemelek Center for Rural Development and Social Progress, where she was accompanied by last year’s and this year’s stars: Ekrem Coşkun and Fevzi Gök respectively as part of the project entitled 81 Stars from 81 Cities under her aegis.
Mrs. Gül was informed about the courses at the center established to enable the women with limited financial means who have migrated from the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia to develop themselves and help them acquire a profession and thrive. The First Lady chatted with the women and closely examined their works at the course where they are given lessons for rug weaving, cooking, computers, sewing, reading and writing and hairdressing.
“IT IS NOT TOO LATE FOR ANYTHING”
The First Lady was then presented with a hand woven rug on which her name was written. Mrs. Gül suggested to the women that they prioritize literacy and study at schools so that they can improve their knowledge and be good examples for their children, exclaiming: “It is not too late for anything!” The First lady promised to continue supporting those wishing to study at schools.
The First Couple also attended the ceremony for the new academic year at Korkut Ata University. Having completed their programs in Osmaniye, they proceeded to the city of Hatay.
